Willow Beach sits inside Lake Mead National Recreation Area on the Arizona side of the Colorado River. The launch area is roughly 14 road miles south of Hoover Dam, tucked into the Black Canyon corridor where steep volcanic walls narrow around clear, cold water.
For paddlers, its importance is simple: Willow Beach provides direct access to the Black Canyon National Water Trail without requiring a Hoover Dam launch permit. From here, kayaks can travel upstream toward Emerald Cave or downstream into the broader reaches of Lake Mohave.
Willow Beach is not merely the meeting point. It is the moment Las Vegas falls away and the expedition begins.

An accessible base camp at the edge of wild country.
The developed riverfront includes a paddlecraft launch, boat ramp, marina, restrooms, a fishing pier, picnic areas, and seasonal food and store services. That makes Willow Beach a practical starting point for a guided kayak tour while keeping the dramatic canyon landscape immediately within reach.
Our guests receive final meeting instructions before departure. After equipment fitting and a calm-water briefing, the group leaves the marina reach and turns upstream, where developed shoreline quickly gives way to rock, reflection, and open sky.

A National Water Trail through a desert gorge.
The Black Canyon National Water Trail follows approximately 30 miles of the Colorado River. Designated in 2014, it was the first National Water Trail in the Southwest and the first to flow through a desert. Willow Beach sits at river mile 52½, creating a natural access point to the northern canyon.
The experience is defined by contrast: sun-baked cliffs above cool water, broad desert light turning into deep shadow, and a sense of solitude within reach of Las Vegas. Sandy beaches, coves, caves, historic structures, and occasional wildlife sightings add texture along the wider corridor.

Wildlife, conservation, and a living river corridor.
Desert bighorn sheep are often seen on cliffs along the Black Canyon Water Trail, although wildlife appearances are never guaranteed. Birds, fish, and other desert species use the river as a narrow ribbon of habitat through an otherwise arid landscape.
Just north of the marina, the Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery supports native fish conservation and recreational fisheries. Its presence is part of the modern story of this river—one shaped by recreation, water management, habitat protection, and careful stewardship.

Yes. Emerald Cave is approximately two miles upstream from Willow Beach. Our guided itinerary is about 4.4 miles round trip, with the route and timing adjusted for weather, water, traffic, and guest conditions.
Do I need kayaking experience?+
No prior kayaking experience is required for our guided format. Guests receive equipment fitting, a pre-launch briefing, and on-water instruction.
What facilities are available at Willow Beach?+

Is Willow Beach the same as Lake Mead?+
Willow Beach is within Lake Mead National Recreation Area, but it sits along the Colorado River/Lake Mohave reach below Hoover Dam rather than on the main body of Lake Mead.
